God's love and strands of hair

God's love and strands of hair

There's a quote by Jesus that is really revealing of how God values animals and humans, and that's Luke 12:6-7.

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows."

The full quote is a few verses longer, and the context is about trusting in and relying on God rather than trusting in wealth, but this portion of the quote draws a very clear picture about how to relate value of living beings. On the one hand, every life matters, also a tiny sparrow. Don't disregard animals, don't treat them as inanimate objects, don't be cruel to them, and show them respect!

But at the same time, God cares for us humans in a very specific way. We are unique. Do you know how many hairs you have on your head? The average human has over 100 000 hairs on their head. Have you ever counted yours? Would you care to, even if it was practically doable? God does! But what Jesus is saying is not really that God counted your hairs to learn how many you have. God is omniscient, and thus already knows that. The point is that God cares to know. It matters to God if you have 110941 hairs on your head, or 110942, because you matter that much. And if you are someone who has 0 hairs on your head, and really wished it was 110941 or 110942, God still loves you just as much, and cares just as much to know about your 0 hairs.

It's not really about the hairs, it's about you. God loves you.

What is love, though?
