All prices and numbers below are from the morning of October 8, 2026. Crypto moves by the minute, so check live prices before you act on anything here.
If you only glanced at the token unlock calendars this week, you probably walked away scared. Depending on which tracker you opened, this week's unlocks added up to anything from about $144 million to well over $1 billion. That gap alone tells you something: the headline numbers in crypto are often not the real numbers. So let me walk through what actually happened.
Hyperliquid: the "$340 million unlock" that wasn't a dump
The biggest number on the calendar belonged to Hyperliquid. Some trackers showed a theoretical team unlock of close to $900 million. The real amount was 3.75 million HYPE, worth roughly $330 million when it was announced. The team unstaked those tokens and said the whole batch is being sold over the counter to a single institutional buyer, which means it doesn't have to be dumped on public order books.
That sounds comforting, and it does reduce the immediate pressure, but I wouldn't call it a closed case. Nobody has disclosed who the buyer is, what price they paid, or whether they've agreed to any lock-up, so those tokens could still end up on exchanges later. The CEO of Hyperliquid Strategies even came out and denied his company was the buyer, so the mystery stays a mystery for now.
History says unlocks don't move the price in one predictable direction. HYPE dropped about 7% after July's unlock, about 3% after August's, and rose about 1% after June's. Today HYPE trades around $87, down roughly 4% on the day, after pulling back from a peak near $98.
Ethena: the one I find most interesting
Earlier this week, Ethena did something unusual. Instead of letting investor tokens trickle out every month until March 2028, it pulled the entire remaining schedule forward into one event. That released about 1.41 billion ENA, around 14% of circulating supply, in a single day.
Trackers disagree on the number again. One of them showed only about 171.88 million ENA because it missed the accelerated portion, so I'd go with the figure of roughly 1.4 billion. You'll also see a scarier headline about 3.03 billion ENA tied to StablecoinX having its lock-up lifted. Most of those tokens still can't be sold without the Ethena Foundation's approval, so I wouldn't stack that number on top of the other one.
The idea behind all this is to get rid of the constant monthly overhang. The foundation also bought out some seed investors who had been selling. The catch is that the big buyback plan, where 95% of net protocol revenue goes to buying ENA, only switches on once USDe supply reaches $7.5 billion. It's sitting around $4.9 billion right now. ENA trades in the low-to-mid 20-cent range, and the market isn't exactly throwing a party. Team and foundation unlocks also keep going into 2028, so it's not dilution-free. Standard Chartered recently put a $1.10 target on ENA for the end of 2027, but I take targets like that with a big grain of salt.
What's still coming
The unlocks aren't over yet. STABLE has about $23.6 million unlocking today, around 3.3% of float, with the token trading near $0.027. The biggest standard unlock of the week is ADI tomorrow, October 9, at about $58 million, roughly 4.4% of its market cap, with the token near $8. Aptos follows on October 11 with 11.31 million APT, worth about $9 million, or roughly 1.3% of float. A handful of smaller ones, including MOVE, BABY, LINEA and IO, are each only a few million dollars.
Further out, Pump.fun releases about 618 million PUMP on October 17, and ZRO has about $45 million coming on October 20. To me, an unlock is a calendar of potential volatility, not a guaranteed drop. What matters is whether real demand shows up to absorb the new supply.
Bitcoin and Ethereum: the market blinked
Now to the part that actually hurt. Bitcoin is trading around $82,000 to $82,700, after touching a low near $82,150 to $82,300, its weakest level in about three weeks. Earlier this week it was near $87,000, so that's roughly a 5.5% slide in just a few days. The $82,000 area is the support level everyone is watching, and if it breaks, $80,000 is the next obvious magnet.
Ethereum is around $2,530, down from about $2,738 earlier in the week, which is roughly a 7% drop. Analysts are watching the $2,500 to $2,560 zone as support. For perspective, ETH's all-time high is $4,946.
The bigger picture is just as shaky. Total crypto market cap is about $2.92 trillion, with Bitcoin dominance near 56.9%. Around $550 million in leveraged positions got liquidated, mostly longs. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw about $487 million in net outflows on October 7, and the Fear & Greed Index cooled to 64, still in greed territory but lower than before.
Why it fell: this wasn't really about crypto
The pressure came from outside our little world. Brent crude climbed above $102 a barrel, and the 10-year Treasury yield rose to around 5.31%, near its highest level since 2002. Traders are also waiting on the Fed minutes. When oil and bond yields climb together, risk assets usually get hit first, and crypto is about as risky as it gets. In my opinion, that's why a week that started with unlock headlines turned red for reasons that had little to do with them.
Other news worth knowing
The one that got people talking was Ethereum researcher Justin Drake's call for Bitcoin and Ether holders to go into "bunker mode" and prepare for the possibility that AI could eventually break wallet cryptography. The community is split on it. I think it's worth watching, not panicking over.
On the more constructive side, Securitize is reportedly bringing tokenized Apple, Nvidia and Tesla to Solana, with NYSE trading said to be in the works. Standard Chartered is also reported to be expanding its institutional crypto and real-world-asset custody to Singapore. On the regulation front, October brings new rules in several countries, including South Korea, the UK and Taiwan. And ether.fi announced its own branded stablecoin built on Ethena's platform.
My takeaway
Weeks like this remind me that token-specific stories can get steamrolled by the bigger market backdrop in a single day. Oil and bond yields matter more than any unlock calendar right now. I'm watching Bitcoin's $82,000 level and whether the HYPE and ENA supply gets absorbed or quietly sold, and I'm not rushing into anything.
This is not financial advice. It only shares my personal opinion. Please do your own research before making any decision.
