Wing Chun

Wing Chun

By By sea and land | Modern living | 4 Dec 2021

Wing Chun is a martial arts from Southern China it's exact origins are unknown as it was often passed down from teacher to pupil. My instructor told me that is was Southern Chinese boxing for women. There are over eight lineages with the Ip Man one being the most well known.

Wing Chun has three empty handed forms, two weapons forms and the wooden dummy form. I have only practiced the empty hand forms. When I first become interested in Wing Chun I joined a club in Rotterdam and was very shocked how effective it and simple it actually was.

The first time I spared was against a younger weaker opponent I was completely fatigued. While my opponent had not even started to sweat. Normally I would have easily overcome opponents in other martial arts. The one thing that amazed me most was the lack of energy that was needed and the relaxed way my opponent was able to offensivey defend themselves.

The biggest challenge I had was being able to practice and remain relaxed. I have used techniques that I learnt when sparing at Krav Maga and other fighting arts and it seems to completely confuse people who have not practiced Wing Chun.

It is a great martial arts that is reasonably easy to learn and most importantly it can be very effective in a violent confrontation. Not many clubs will allow sparing as you have to be quite disciplined.

5. Can be learnt from a young age.
