Navajo language is a native language from the USA it is spoken by 170,000 Native speakers (2015 Census).

Navajo is an Apachean language that has fortunately survived to this day. In the late 19th century boarding schools were formed in an effort to acculturate Navajo children. They were forced to learn English and practice Christianity. Like many countries where English speakers had settled they would be punished for speaking their native language in their own country. If they were heard speaking Navajo they would have their mouths washed out with Lye soap. When these children grew up they would often raise their children speaking English as they did not want their children to be punished.
Durring WW2 the United States Government used à code based on the Navajo language that was not possible to décode.

I have studied langueges most of my life and when I come across Navajo on Duolingo I decided to give it à go. So far I have completed the first level of the course.

I understand virtually nothing but, have gained an insight into the language at à very basic level.
If I ever do travel to the USA I would want to study the language and learn about the Navajo culture.
