"I Am": Exposing the Narcissistic Facade in the World of Self-Improvement

by: Michaelson Williams, TSX | Editor at MMAP Magazine | Author of Trainwashing; The Secrets of Positive Brain Washing

The ubiquitous mantra of "I Am," championed by self-help gurus worldwide, has revealed itself as an unwitting sanctuary for the latent narcissist within us all. My extensive exploration of the self-help domain and its societal impact has spanned numerous years, witnessing a notable transformation in an industry purportedly dedicated to enhancing individuals. Rather than fostering personal growth, my observations suggest that the self-help industry, paradoxically, has exacerbated negative behaviors among its consumers.

My lifelong fascination with human thought and behavior has driven me to discern between innate human tendencies and externally imposed societal norms. Through my research, I've discovered that people are remarkably susceptible to manipulation, often unaware of how external forces guide them from birth to death. Many individuals mistakenly believe they are in control of their lives, oblivious to the fact that their decisions are frequently dictated by external influences. Adopting a deliberate approach to life, involving mindful choices in what enters one's mind and body, is the key to exerting genuine control over decision-making. Without this intentionality, one risks surrendering control to external forces.

The misappropriation of the "I Am" concept has further deepened this layer of control over unsuspecting minds. Marketed as a tool for self-care and improved mental health, the "I Am" mantra has surreptitiously engaged the narcissistic aspect of the human psyche. Individuals began wielding the "I Am" as a source of empowerment, unaware that it fueled selfishness within them, eventually surfacing in their interactions with society. This shift led people to view themselves as isolated entities, detached from the collective consciousness, breeding a divisive mindset.

"I Am" Right

The distorted use of "I Am" convinced people of the infallibility of their ideas without engaging in critical self-reflection. Introspection became a neglected tool, allowing individuals to embrace a false sense of authority over information, stunting their pursuit of real answers. This socially programmed version of "I Am" gained such influence that self-help groups and books centered around it began to emerge.

"I Am" Strong

"I Am" was wielded like a weapon, used to dismiss the thoughts and ideas of others, fostering societal narcissism. This distorted version of "I Am" infiltrated various mediums – movies, music, television, news media, and the internet through influencers. While "I Am" has always been a part of human existence, the current iteration has become a toxic force in the collective psyche.

The True I Am

Contrary to the distorted version, the genuine "I Am" holds no selfishness or narcissism. It exists in a perpetual state of self-reflection and awareness, embodying the collective consciousness. The authentic "I Am" cannot harm others without inflicting harm upon itself, emphasizing responsibility for thoughts and actions within the collective.

The Consequences

The bastardization of "I Am" has wrought severe consequences on society, evident in how individuals treat themselves and others. The genuine priorities of life, such as family and friendships, have been overshadowed by the narcissism and selfishness perpetuated by the distorted "I Am." This cycle precipitates a descent into depression and mental illness.

A subtle twist in the deception is the normalization of mass mental illness, blurring the line between the destructive "I Am" and the harmonious true "I Am." The biggest casualty of the distorted "I Am" is the loss of genuine identity and community, replaced by a socially manufactured self controlled by external influences.

Conclusion

In essence, two distinct "I Am" entities coexist in this fabricated reality. One promotes unity and collective responsibility, while the other fosters separation, leading to stress, loneliness, and delusion. Deliberate introspection and self-awareness are essential to connect with the authentic "I Am," shielding the mind from negative programming and promoting collective responsibility.

Without intentional introspection, the connection to the authentic "I Am" is compromised. Meditation serves as a conduit, linking individuals to the collective "I Am" and distancing them from the self-absorbed version. Rooted in self-reflection, the genuine "I Am" acts as a protective barrier against mindlessness and the negative influences that shape a selfish and narcissistic worldview."
