Unfortunately, there is no UFC event on this weekend, so there will be no Quick Bets article either. However, it just didn't feel right to not post anything on the weekend, especially in anticipation of such a great fight coming up next week. I'm already hyped and so should be you! We got the third, concluding match of Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirer, a fight that can not not deliver! So, let's jump right into it, come with me down memory lane.
I. Infamous "Pea Head & lil' Hillbilly" Press Conference
Honestly you could start this even earlier and it would be just as interesting. But right before their first collision, this little press conference thing clearly stood out. McGregor was his new, never seen, brash and cocky fighter calling out people left and right, delivering one-liners and destroying every competition that was put in his way. Conor's early UFC days where special, and in a time where the UFC fighters where mostly characterized by humility and respect towards your opponent, he changed the game completely. Fascinating to see the pressure cooker that was the verbal warfare he was using on Poirer (and many others at that time) to put them out of their game.
Shorter highlight clip:
The full thing:
Honestly, the full press build up was worth the watch, maybe you can find some more yourself, here is another small clip.
II. UFC Embedded Vlog
No big UFC event would be the same without the building anticipation of the Embedded shown on fight week. Fortunately, the show was already on back then, when McGregor and Poirer had their first fight. Here is a link for Episode 1, and if you are a degenerate just like me, you will watch the full vlog to Episode 6. It's a nice documentation of the mindset changes that Conor's words caused in Poirer. Perhaps the most famous clip of this is in Episode 3, when both collided in the hall and Poirer stumbled over his own words when he said "I never disliked somebody this much before". Watch Episode 4 just after that and catch Conor's reaction to that same clip, it's hilarious.
III. Weigh-Ins
Nothing catches the pure buzzing excitement and adrenaline of these fights quite like a McGregor Weigh-In. Either jump right to their face-off, or do it like me, and catch the full thing, as that's what delivers the building anticipation best...also it's nice to remember what other banger fights were on that card! Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero Ladies and Gentlement! Catch the full thing here:
IV. The Fight
Honestly, it's a bit of a waste that you aren't able to catch the walk-in in this free fight clip of McGregor vs. Poirer I. It is a crucial part of the fight experience, if you are in the arena or not, and adds so much. So if you got a UFC Fightpass subscription (the content is great on there and not that expensive, definitely worth it!) I 100% recommend you to search for the full event on there (can be a huge pain in the ass, their search engine is pure torture) and start from the walk-ins. Or maybe even before that? All game. Otherwise, just check this free youtube clip of their first fight:
Fight Motion is my drug, unfortunately, it was very short back then. Nonetheless, it gives you an overview of the other fights that where on, and you get to see some poetry in motion:
Also make sure to watch until the end, the octagon interview is a classic.
V. Post fight
Unfortunately I did not find a Thrill & Agony video on this one. Maybe it was not on yet back then. A bummer, it's always worth a watch to catch the after fight vibes, especially after such a big one. Only thing I found, and even though rather irrelevant to this article, still funny: Yoel Romero after blatantly cheating in their fight and knocking Kennedy out in the process, approaching him backstage after the fight. If you find something for after the fight to McGregor - Poirer, please post in the comments and I will quickly add it.
That's it for now, I'm sure I missed so much, but the most relevant pieces to their first fight are in there. Any gem I missed, please shoot straight into the comments, I would appreciate it.
I'm already so hyped! Cheers!
