Introduction
About 2 weeks ago, I finally signed up to bean author on Publish0x after months of lurking.
My initial reluctance stemmed from concerns about the opportunity/time cost of writing posts. As many investors know, there is a time value to money. Let give you my personal corollary: there is a money cost to time. So, was Publish0x going to be worth my time? Could I be more economically productive doing something else?
I decided to do an experiment. I would write a few articles and see if my work would gain any traction (as measured by tips) and how long that work would continue to work for me. Here is the data from my first week of posts:
Preliminary Results
Post 1. Creative writing (Sci-Fi) and a 1 minute read. I got 67 views and 0.03 in tips.
Post 2. Informational/Editorial post about the Publish0x platform and a 1 minute read. I got 138 views and 0.43 in tips.
Post 3. Informational/Personal post about investing mistakes and a 1 minute read. I got 848 views and 3.66 in tips.
Post 4. Informational post about Constant platform and a 1-2 minute read. I got 445 views and 1.88 in tips.
Post 5. Informational/Personal post about retirement planning concerns and a 3 minute read. I got 158 views and 0.15 in tips.
Conclusions / New Hypotheses:
This information gave me a better understanding of the Publish0x
1. Audiences on Publish0x enjoy informational articles about finance, tech, and crypto. There isn't enough of an audience for other material yet. My creative writing and personal posts garnered very few tips or views. I looked at other creative writing/non-crypto posts on Publish0x and found similar outcomes. This suggests that it's the nature of the post rather than the author or writing style.
2. My best articles averaged about 0.40-0.45 USD / 100 views. My worst articles had very small returns. This observation, in conjunction with observation #1, suggests that targeting your content to audiences is vital to success on this platform.
3. Longer articles did not get more tips. My longest post actually only got a moderate amount of tips. Since longer posts take more effort to write, this leads me to explore how to optimize my effort to tip ratio.
4. After about 3-5 days, the number of new views drops off dramatically. This is likely to the placement of posts on the Publish0x "New" and "Explore" pages. Therefore, posts don't "work" to earn you more tips indefinitely. There are diminishing returns over time. Thus, maintaining active "tip-flow" will require a steady stream of new content.
5. I did gain 24 followers over the last week. Perhaps building a high follower count will allow me to reach greater audiences over time. I think I will continue to focus on creating interesting, high-quality, and HONEST content to maximize my followers, value for their time, and tips for me.
Final Thoughts:
If I achieve greater success in the days to come, I hope to share some strategies and tips on how to maximize your productivity on Publish0x!
As always, I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.
