Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

By PVM | Mind Puzzle | 22 May 2020

22nd of May is known in the Cryptoworld as Bitcoin Pizza Day, and today's marks the ten-years anniversary of the first BTC transaction.

The story has become part of folklore, not because of the transaction, but because of  the 10,000 Bitcoins paid for the two pizzas. At today's price is worth over £75 million

In 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz agreed to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for two delivered pizzas from Papa John's.  He started the discussion on the bitcointalk forum. Laszlo had no idea that the transaction will become part of the Bitcoin history. The man who took up Hanyecz's offer and bought the two pizzas was rewarded with 10,000 Bitcoins. Even on 22nd of May 2010, this transaction was a bargain, because 10,000 Bitcoins were worth around $41 at the time while the  pizza bill was $25.

Laszlo's pizzas have got more and more expensive. Nine months after the purchase, Bitcoin reached parity with the U.S. dollar, making the two pizzas worth $10,000 and in 2015, the two pizzas were valued at $2.4 million. Today, Bitcoin is at just over $9100, making the order worth over $90 million.

Even if the transaction was made "unofficially", and Laszlo didn't even pay the restaurant directly, this transaction was marked in history as the first BTC transaction.

Anderson Cooper had the first television interview with Laszlo Hanyecz. When Laszlo was asked if they are nights when he wakes up, thinking that he could have had $800 million if he hadn't bought those pizzas, he could admitted that thinking like that was not good for him. He later told the NY Times that BTC had a low value back than and the idea of trading cryptocoins for pizza was incredibly cool.

However, that transaction revolutionised the payments world and was the first step of the cryptocurrency evolution,  and the order that made it closer than ever to use BTC in everyday transactions, such as buying coffee from Costa or breakfast from Subway.

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day to everyone, and lets hope that in 10 years time we will not be remembered in folklore as the guys who sold their BTC for £7,500 instead of £75,000. Even if this prediction will become a reality in 2030, by than the Laszlo's pizzas will be worth £750 million
