The Ukrainian crisis unleashed following the Russian invasion (oops, "special operation") of Ukraine has helped to demonstrate once again the revolutionary nature of blockchain technology, and in particular cryptocurrencies.
In the weeks following the enemy attack, the Ukrainian government immediately gave the possibility to anyone who wanted to contribute to the cause of their country by sending donations via crypto, directly to the official wallet addresses. This meant that thousands and thousands of people, with the simplicity of a few clicks of their mouse, could immediately contribute to the cause. In this way, funds amounting to tens of millions of dollars in digital tokens were immediately raised.

In the meantime, many non-profit organizations have used the same method, sharing their wallet addresses. For example:
- Come Back Alive, a non-profit organization that supports the Ukrainian military;
- The Kyiv Independent, an independent newspaper based in Ukraine;
- Hospitallers, a volunteer organization that helps injured Ukrainian soldiers.
Even the Crypto Community, thanks to awareness and solidarity campaigns immediately launched on CT (crypto twitter), has contributed substantially to the fundraising. I cite two famous examples:
- UkraineDAO, launched by a famous Russian feminist punk protest group member of Pussy Riot and the NFT collectives Trippy Labs and PleasrDAO;
- Unchain Foundation, a charity started by the Ukrainian blockchain community.

As the months went by, America and the European Union, as well as other countries, began to impose heavier sanctions on Russia. These sanctions unfortunately end up affecting even those Russians who are totally opposed to the war unleashed by their leader and who may have participated in the various protests that have taken place in all Russian cities as a protest.
Just last month, the Russian government decided to impose forced mobilization on its own population, forcing thousands of Russian men to enlist to be sent to the front. This triggered the sense of self-survival of many of them, which then turned into a mass exodus to the borders to avoid going to die in this absurd war.
Where does the DeFi come into play in all of this?
It is news a few days ago that due to the tightening of European sanctions, exchanges active in Russia such as LocalBitcoins, Crypto.com and Blockchain.com, but also Binance, Coinbase, etc., have sent emails to their customers telling them to withdraw their funds as soon as possible as from now on they would not be able to use their services.
So what option remains for the respectable Russians to access their funds? Obviously use DeFi and keep your tokens outside the CEX. Fortunately, thanks to vital protocols such as THORSwap, you can continue to exchange your tokens without interruption, according to your needs.
In this Tweet I tried to summarize the essence of this article.
The bottom line is that regardless of the nationality of each of us, and regardless of the actions of our governments, cryptocurrencies, DeFi and blockchains come to our aid. Thanks to their censorship resistant and neutral nature, they are and will increasingly be the ultimate weapon against the oppression of authoritarian governments and dictatorships.
How much we must wait to finally see the Nobel Prize awarded to Satoshi Nakamoto?
