Money for Nothing, Blockchain, Bitcoin and the Metaverse

By Pol Chain | Metaverso | 3 Jun 2022

Look back to look forward. As simple and absurd as it sounds sometimes there’s the key to understand the present. Hidden at plain sight on one great song on an even greater videoclip is a possible interpretation of the repeating times of humanity, like waves that come and go, endlessly

If you want to know what the Metaverse looks like today, all you need to do is travel in time… but backwards! History is one of the greatest external teachers of the human being, along with shame and experience, which come from within. To understand what is already a reality today, you have to watch the first 35 seconds of the 1985 Money for Nothing video clip by the British band Dire Straits.

To enter the future is to jump headfirst into a screen! The most disruptive contemporary virtual technological development today looks like that. A round of applause please for this hyperbolic phrase… clap… clap… clap. If someone had said in 1985 that years later people would spend (invest?) billions of dollars on animated games and movies, they would have called that exaggeration too.

Emboldened, I will continue to hold onto my fantasies and double the bet. YouTube is today what MTV was in the 1980s: lord and master of videos. Do you know what will happen in the future with Web2 and its reign? It will end up like MTV. It will be just a memory of what was.

Thirty-seven years ago, the monotonous request of the divergent voices was: I want my… I want my MTV, today the claim is: I want my… I want my money (for nothing). The problem is that what is essential today will be just a superficial accessory in a few years, or it will have mutated into something, neither better nor worse, just different. As YouTube suppressed MTV, blockchain will liquidate Web2. Will the same thing happen with fiat money and cryptos? It’s possible.

Three years ago, 9to5 in person work most of the week was essential and indisputable. That essential logic imploded in just one year. Nothing and no one are essential. This is as sad as it is real.

Money for nothing introduced innovation, avant-garde design and fascination with mid-80s computer animation applied to a song into video clip culture. The children we were remember the enormous good impression that those geometric, three-dimensional, rough and slow images that we had not seen before made on us.

Bitcoin brought to the financial culture the same innovation, cutting edge design and fascination with blockchain applied to money. Blockchain today is (apologies for moderation or hyperbole in reverse) in the same instance as computer animation was in 1985. I believe that blockchain has not even reached the primeval instance of the commercial internet (the 90s) let alone the dotcom bubble (2000s).

However, although time always moves the same, events unfold faster.
