Legend has it that in medieval times unexplored regions were frequently labeled with terrible inscriptions on maps such as Hic Sunt Dracones (There be Dragons) and were accompanied by gruesome figures to scare off intriguing travelers. The unknown caused terror and gave relief to name the unknown with the feared. The hypothetical dragons or sea monsters seemed a very good explanation to discourage seasoned sailors, especially if the graphic was accompanied by fantastic stories of lame or one-eyed crew members, or cabin boys eager for fame and free beer in a downtown pub in some metropolis. With an invented concept and a few words, the unexplored became simple and satisfying.
