Mental Health: Heal Severe Mental Illness

Clubhouse International For the Mentally ill

By McShnugget | Mental illness | 19 Jun 2021

As a member with a mental illness, Clubhouse International has helped me build work skills, such as, effective communication, time management, and socialization. I attend Vincent House Clubhouse. You may find a list of clubhouses in your area by going to the Clubhouse International website. Members are engaged in a work-ordered day, by learning skills at the Clubhouse in the culinary and business units. Members learn how to cook, and do clerical projects, and administrative tasks, like answering phones calls from new members who want a tour of the clubhouse. Tours are scheduled at the convenience of the potential member. Members get help enrolling in college, or to finish their GEDs. We are helped by the staff to find employment, including Transitional, Supported, and Independent employment. As members, we eat lunch together and engage in socialization in the clubhouse. Socialization in the clubhouse, helps to build self-esteem and confidence in oneself. The beauty of our clubhouse is that we have close relationships among staff and members. Having a structured schedule is a motivator to understand the value of hard work. We are engaged in social events, such as bowling, going to theatres, employment dinners, and more. Working every day helps build stamina to prepare for a real job. To become a member, the member must have a psychiatric evaluation from a psychiatrist.
