y is the shortest possible written sentence in existence. A sentence is more than just a word. There are a couple of main words and some other smaller words around them. Properly assembled, a string of words will create a thought in the reader's mind. Thoughts can also be questions.

Think about how simple the question, 'y,' is.

Now think about how long it took evolution to produce a species that can ask the question, 'why?' Notice the difference?

Now think about how long it took our species to come up with the technology required to create a new type of daily social interaction that eventually resulted in the use of short form words or letters that can also function as a sentence. 'Y' being the shortest, most common and often most unspoken of them all. How often do you ask someone a question using just the word 'why?'? I bet it's hardly ever.

Now think about how long it will probably be before we create artificial minds that are capable of asking the question, 'why?'

But if you were to teach an animal that might be able to ask the question, 'why' (such as a chimpanzee), how to read. It would not read, 'y,' as, 'why?' Instead, it would just read it as the letter, 'y,' on its own. No thought would be created in the mind of the chimpanzee.
