From Financial Inclusion to Totalitarianism: The Potential Pitfalls of CBDCs

By ⚡ Daniela ⚡ | Me and Bitcoin | 22 Jun 2023

Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are digital versions of national currencies issued by central banks. While many will be "selling" CBDCs as a way to increase financial inclusion and efficiency in payment systems, there are concerns about how they could impact privacy, censorship, and government surveillance.

One concern with CBDCs is increased government surveillance. Since these digital currencies can be tracked in real-time by governments, it raises questions about how much control over individuals’ transactions they will have access to. This level of transparency may create security risks since it allows for more detailed tracking of individuals’ spending habits which could lead to exploitation or discrimination against certain groups based upon their spending patterns.

Another issue with CBDCs is related to privacy concerns. The centralization aspect means that all transactions are recorded on a blockchain controlled by central authorities - making them inherently less private than cash-based transactions. This lack of anonymity could pose problems for individuals who prefer not to disclose their transaction history due to personal reasons such as health issues or other sensitive matters.

Moreover, many experts argue that this type of technology can increase the likelihood of censorship by governments since they have greater control over what gets included in blocks on the blockchain network. Governments may censor certain types of transactions deemed illegal or politically objectionable, thereby leading to restrictions on freedom and democracy.

Some people view CBDCs as an opportunity for increased financial inclusion, especially in countries where large portions remain unbanked due to various factors such as limited access banking services, poverty levels preventing opening accounts. But the potential drawbacks such as increased government control over financial transactions and a centralized system ultimately leading towards greater inequality among populations, need to be talked about, before it's too late.

Policymakers need to carefully evaluate all aspects before implementing any new form of digital currency into their respective economies. While there are potential benefits associated with CBDCs such as increasing financial inclusion and efficiency in payment systems, there are also significant concerns related to privacy violations by governments who use them for surveillance purposes, censorship through controlling what gets included on blocks within blockchain networks, increased vulnerability due to cybersecurity risks, and more centralized control which could ultimately lead towards greater inequality among populations.

It's important to note that many people believe they live in democratic countries where things like this cannot happen. However, history has shown us multiple examples of democratic countries turning into dictatorships over time. Therefore, it is crucial not only to consider the current state but also future possibilities when evaluating the implications of CBDCs on society and individual freedoms. As we look back at historical events like Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia - two once-democratic nations that turned into totalitarian regimes - it serves as a reminder that vigilance is necessary even in times when things seem stable and secure. That's why I'm buying Bitcoin every time I get a chance. There is a possibility that it might become a disaster in the future.
