I recently watched a video that made me realize something deeply unsettling: there is a catastrophe unfolding that almost no one is talking about.

Sudan has been in a full-scale war since 2023 and is experiencing a near total state collapse. With a population of over 51 million people, this is not a marginal crisis, it is one of the largest humanitarian disasters in the world today. By 2025, Sudan became the country with the highest number of refugees globally, with levels of famine that in many areas exceed even those seen in Palestine.

The numbers are staggering. Around half a million people are estimated to have been killed, and more than 15 million have been displaced from their homes. Entire cities have been hollowed out. Institutions no longer function. There is effectively no state.

What stands out most is the brutality and the silence around it. In most modern conflicts, states are at least scrutinized for bombing hospitals or targeting civilians. In Sudan, hospitals are being bombed openly, food supplies are deliberately burned, civilians are forced into fighting, and yet it barely registers in global discourse.

The situation feels disturbingly primitive, as if basic rules of modern warfare no longer apply. Sudan’s modern history has been a grim cycle: military rulers seize power, people revolt, the regime collapses, and another military authority takes its place. Each uprising promises change, and each ends with another form of military domination.

This war is not just another chapter in that cycle. It is shaping up to be the worst humanitarian crisis of this decade, and one of the greatest human tragedies of our time, unfolding almost entirely out of sight.
