Sphere of Influence

Who are you?

A Japanese proverb says you have 3 faces. The 1st face you show the world, the 2nd face you show your close friends and family, the 3rd face is the truest reflection of yourself and its the face you show no one.

In today's age of social media, I think we have lost touch with our 3rd face and in some instances, with our 2nd face. We mainly interact with each other on the internet and more often don't know how to interact with other people in the same room. We've become attached to our Spheres of Influence in the sense that we also become those spheres that we cling to for comfort. The spheres I refer to are built from who you follow on your social media feeds, the friends you hang around with, and the families we have. These can have either positive and/or negative effects on how we view the world. Still, it is important not to allow these spheres to completely shape us and how we portray ourselves to Life.

The more connected you are to your 3rd face, the most 'You', the stronger you are in an individualistic sense; the more connected those three faces are to each other, the stronger you are as a person. How can we attain this?

There are a lot of truths that we have forgotten within the Ancient societies and cultures that we are unable to experience today. We read and listen to tales of individuals embarking on journeys to “find oneself” and emerge stronger than ever after discovering who 'they' are. Although this is an extreme example, we still experience a variation of this today. The friends I made up north understand that there is something about leaving your hometown friends and family that develops who you are. Those people left a Sphere of Influence, grew, and created another.

I'm not saying you have to pack up your things and travel, although I do highly recommend it, I'm suggesting that you should find a pocket of space where you can abandon the influences of others and the burdens of social media. This pocket is as simple as doing an activity you enjoy, for some its hiking and for others its painting. Do more of this. Humans are social creatures but we need to develop our individual persona which will in turn only enriches the culture and society we inhabit.

Leave the Sphere of Influence, who will you become?

Find yourself & nothing will ever stop you.
