We create our worlds out of the explanations we
have available for doing so. - Lee Thayer
What are the consequences of adopting this way of thinking? And, what are the consequences of ignoring it? Either way, you'll have to explain (to yourself or others). Yes, this phenomenon is that ubiquitous.
If "we create our worlds out of the explanations we have available for doing so," wouldn't it then be in our best interest to pull forth (and live through) those explanations that are going to get us where we need to be? And, also, doesn't this tear apart the idea that life is somehow controlled by "destiny" or "fate?" While there are many things we cannot control (i.e. the weather, the people around us, the larger forces we take part in), there are things we can control. Our explanations are ours to control. If you want to get in shape, don't use explanations that stand in the way of doing exercise or eating well. If you want to learn a skill, explain to yourself why you should spend time diligently engaging in the learning of that skill.
Every way of explaining will alter the course of your life.
At first, it may not seem like it, but think about this... Every thought you have is a way of explaining the world. Every action you take is explainable. You rarely do things that are not explainable. When you do do things that are out of the ordinary, you will have to explain yourself to others. Therefore, it makes perfect strategic sense to perform the explanations you need to lead you on your path. Your path is not the path of the person next to you. Don't let their explanations (of how they see the world or you as a part of it) influence you in ways that pull you from your path. Explain yourself in a new way and notice the difference. Explain your past in a way that feeds into the future self you are becoming. Notice the difference. Explain your life in terms of how you want it to end up. Then do what needs to be done. Notice the difference.
May these thoughts serve your day well. Thank you.
