I Kings 19 :11-13

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

There is a general rule of thumb I have found in life: the more attention someone tries to draw to themselves the less they actually have to say. Is there anything of substance on a TV or radio commercial? Of course not, that's why they have to turn the volume up.

Elijah knew this rule of thumb as well. He ignored the wind, the fire and the earthquake so He could hear the gentle whisper of God. He knew that substance could only be found when he ignored the noise.

Our lives are filled with noise. Do this! buy now! Be here! Don't miss out! All of this lacks substance. Only when we are quiet and focused can we hear the gentle voice of God.
