As you may know, I have set myself the target of getting together enough money to invest so as to get 0.3 Btc. My long term aim is to hold it until I retire (14 years)- by then it will hopefully be worth at least 50 million pounds and I can enjoy my retirement! Realistically I am just hoping that it has increased enough to help my retirement a little more comfortable. It's an addition to what I have already sorted out and when I finally achieve the 0.3 target I will feel a little easier about it all.
I was lucky enough to receive some money from my parents and so I decided to invest the majority of that into the Btc fund, together with getting some shares and other small amounts of crypto coins. Living in China, most Westerners use a VPN as a matter of course. Any website that requires you to fill in a google captcha will not work unless the VPN is on, other websites are completely blocked by what is affectionately known as the Great Firewall of China. Websites like Facebook and the BBC can only be accessed via VPN- the same with Twitter and Pinterest. So having my VPN is a normal occurence but this can cause tons of problems- especially when you are trying to transfer money to your Coinbase account so you can buy some coins.
When the funds had cleared from my father, I put in the transfer request using my bank telephone app and pressed send after carefully checking that all the numbers and references were correct. Immediately a message flashed up saying the payment was on hold and to contact them by phone. This is normally a hassle but I understand they are being careful so I phoned them ... from China...

I love the messages you hear when you are hold. The first minute or two of any phone call is taken up with me being reassured that I am precious to them, and that really shouldn't be bothering them and that I should instead be using their phone app or internet portal. After ignoring those messages for a while and hitting the buttons on my screen I eventually got through to the queue where I was then told that all their operator were busy and that if I really wanted to I could wait (but had I heard about their wonderful mobile app and internet portal?). 5 minutes into the phone call I eventually got through to someone who said there was no record of the transaction and that I should contact the receiving bank to sort out the problem. When I pointed out that it was a message on their banking app that said I needed to contact them I was told that basically it wasn't their fault and to contact the other bank. Great - 25 minutes on the phone with no result. I tried emailing Coinbase- no reply. I then decided to submit a complain to my bank about it all- naturally at the very start of the form it said that complaints could take up to 80-90 days to process but I ignored that and submitted the complaint anyway.
The following morning I tried to send the money again but in a different way- this resulted in me being locked out of my bank account. I tried phoning my bank again and after 30 minutes managed to get it unlocked and the payment allowed. The agent explained to me that because I was using a VPN (so my account was being shown as being located in different countries) and because I was sending it to my crytpo account, it was deemed as suspicious. He then had to read a speech to me about the dangers of investing in crytpo currency and was I really sure Coinbase was legitimate? Although I don't like their fees they seem ok to me and they have been able to sort out most problems fairly quickly for me. Anyway, after listening to the lecture about how dodgy crypto currency is, I was allowed to transfer my money.
What struck me after all this was how anti crypto currency the bank seemed to be- actively discouraging any thought about investing in it. If i hadn't done by my research and due diligence, I would have been persuaded not to transfer the money- and likely offered a nice safe investment vehicle using the bank to look after the money.
So I am nearly up to 0.2 of my investment goal of 0.3. I will be adding in some money each month now it has been set up. My old windows laptop is mining 24 hours and getting over $1 profitability every 24 hours and I am persevering with the free faucet and Cointiply (see this post for further details and referral links). Any suggestions would be welcome as to how I can increase my earnings and stake further.
