As a decentralised currency that you can mine with your web browser or download an app to setup a node, it is one of the few cryptos that encourages the small miners, as it can only be mined using CPU and GPUs. 

They are moving to NIMIQ 2 next year in 2021 where the model will move from POW (Proof of Work) to POS (Proof of Stake).
