Love... One of the most powerful and little known about forces in this world. Obviously, that is a ridiculous statement when we think about some of the well documented physical forces that exist around us, that scientists tell us exist because they have mathematical equations to prove it, such as gravity for instance....but the truth is, when I think of gravity, it does always bring me straight back to thinking about the unseen, intangible but felt force and power of love. Do we have proof of gravity, or simply the power of its force, its effect? I know the weight of my being correlates to the gravity here on earth (9.807 m/s²) because, I'm here sat down and not drifting through the rooms in my house. I know that this is because of gravity because, great men: Sir Isacc Newton, and later Einstein, have told us that gravity is the reason for this. Their equations and experiments have, over centuries really, confirmed this. No, I'm not a scientist, and of course I wouldn't dare dispute this. But I see no difference between knowing that gravity exists and is a powerful, important force in life, and knowing that love too is not just an equally powerful force but one that has had very little scientific observation or validation. Perhaps because love, emotion and the vulnerability it carries with it, is viewed, societally, as a form of weakness. Something feminine, something that is in opposition to war, control and dominance, unlike the applications and realm of the scientific world and discovery.
I feel my ideas are summed up well by Professor Brandt in this clip in Interstellar...
And equally, in the since debunked letter from Einstein to his daughter Lieserl, where he (the author whoever they were) discussed the idea of the Universal force of love, saying something very similar to what I am... That it is equally as misunderstood as scientifically observed as it is powerful... The fact that it was shown not to be a real letter from the man himself means nothing to me really, it just piqued my curiosity, and as Einstein himself once said:
"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing".
Below is a piece of spoken word, audio art poetry I did sometime ago now about how love can feel like gravity. It is called 24.79 m/s² because that is the gravity on Jupiter, a planet with a much stronger gravitational pull than we have here on Earth.
The man I wrote this about, once told me that the chemistry between us was like gravity and that unless one of us exited the planet, it was going no where. It was possibly one of the most romantic and poetic things he ever said to me, and being a woman of poetry, it affected me deeply. We are no longer together, but in many ways he was quite right. Times have changed, I've grown and understood I cannot be with him (he is not good for me) but that feeling, that chemistry, still exists between us, but another force has now come into play... Self preservation. The force that enforces distance because it acknowledges that not all forces are equal, and some should not be obeyed.
Here are the words, in French and English
24.79 m/s²
Waterfalls have nothing upon you
The sheer volume of
Your cascades
Soak me beyond skin
And i
Cannot help but submit
To this desire for
Minor death
I am lying, prostrated
At the foot of your well
I am open
Half drunk and
Drinking in the scent
Of you.
You, who shimmer like
Fata Morgana
You who defy the sun
With the warmth you bring
To me
Like a honey bee
You. Are. Pollinating
And I am blossoming
I am in full receipt.
Volcanoes do not move me
I’ve seen your
Lava flow
Burning hotter than most mere mortals are capable
Deep down deeper
Than merely below
A 1000 tiny fireworks
Explode
Throughout the landscape
Of my being
And your feelings
Have grown
You are silence but i can hear you sing.
The gravity of your sweet night
Kept me baited
For millennia
Across galaxies and oceans
I waited
My feelings compressed
Into boxes of fear
And self preservation
Earth, It would appear
Can no longer hold me
My heart needs to be
Anchored
Weighted
So of Jupiter i dream
24.79 m / s²
Les chutes d'eau n'ont rien
sur toi
Le volume de
Ton cascades
Trempez-moi au-delà de la peau
Et moi
Je ne peux pas m'empêcher de soumettre
A ce désir de
Mort mineure
Je mens, prosterné
Au pied de ton puits
Je suis ouvert
À moitié ivre et
En buvant dans l'odeur
De toi.
Toi qui scintille comme
Morgana
Toi qui défies le soleil
Avec la chaleur que tu apportes
Pour moi
Comme une abeille
Toi. Sont. Pollinisation
Et je m'épanouis
Je reçois en entier.
Les volcans ne me font pas bouger
J'ai vu
Ton coulée de lave
Brûlant plus chaud que la plupart des simples mortels sont capables
Au fond (plus profond)
Que juste en dessous
1000 feux d'artifice minuscules
Exploser
A travers le paysage
De mon être
Et tes sentiments
A grandi
Tu es silencieux mais je peux t'entendre chanter.
La gravité de ta douce nuit
M'a gardé appâté
Depuis des millénaires
À travers les galaxies et les océans
J'ai attendu
Mes sentiments compressés
Dans des boîtes de peur
Et l'auto-préservation
Terre, il semblerait
Je ne peux plus me retenir
Mon cœur doit être
Ancré
Pondéré
Donc de Jupiter je rêve ...
