India is always known for its fortresses and palaces. Today we are going to talk about Lakshmi Vilas palace- which holds the title for the largest private mansion in India. Lekshmi villas palace is currently the home for a family of four, owned by Smarjith Gaikwad, who belongs to the lineage of famous Gaikwads of Maratha.
This palace was built in 1890, in the most luxurious manner. It had a lift, a telephone exchange, and lampposts. The palace spans over 700 acres of land. The 170 rooms enormous structure was built with a mix of both Indian and victorian architecture.
The ground floor of this palace has an area of 5000 Sqft, it was built using state of the art building materials that were bought over to Vadodara from different parts of the world.
The palace that was built at an estimated expense of 180000 British pounds in 1890, is four times the size of Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British royal family which ruled over India for almost 200 years.
