Vint Cerf, the “father of the internet” and top evangelist at Google, has some advice for business leaders who are hoping to close sales quickly on conversational AI: “Don’t.” At a conference in Mountain View, California, on Monday, Cerf pleaded with delegates not to rush into investing in conversational AI just because “it’s a trendy issue.” His caution comes as ChatGPT experiences a surge in popularity and as big tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and Meta are struggling with how to maintain their position as leaders in conversational AI while swiftly enhancing a system that still frequently makes mistakes.

Cerf warned against the temptation to invest just because the technology is “really cool even though it doesn’t work quite right all the time.” He said there is an ethical issue to consider and that people need to be thoughtful about how they use these technologies. He gave the example of asking a chatbot to give him a biography, and the chatbot gave him an inaccurate response that was presented as true.

Cerf also expressed his concern about the potential for harm that can come from mistakes made by the technology. He said engineers should take responsibility for trying to find a way to tame some of these technologies so that they are less likely to cause harm. Ultimately, he said it is important to consider the worst-case potential when investing in A.I.

Despite its growing popularity, Vint Cerf believes that the technology is not advanced enough to warrant near-term bets.
Cerf noted that there is a gap between what the technology says it will do and what it does.

Cerf believes that engineers should take responsibility for taming these technologies in order to minimize potential harm. He also cautioned that executives should not be swayed by “hot topics” and be thoughtful in their investments. While there is certainly potential for A.I., Cerf warns against overestimating its capabilities and making rash decisions.
