Introduction
ChatGPT has the potential to destroy Google in a year or two, according to Paul Buccheit, the creator of Gmail. He believes that ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, could cut into Google’s profits from the Search field, and if Google manages to catch up on AI technology, it may still not be able to protect itself from ChatGPT’s continued aggression.
This raises the question: Could ChatGPT really destroy Google in a few years?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, more widely known as the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, has been the talk of the town since November 2022. It’s basically a prototype chatbot that uses AI to understand and then respond to text. The real kicker though is that it’s designed to converse naturally — a domain long considered to be a Google forte — and so far the results have been amazing surreal even something that’s led to a meteoric surge in usage globally while giving OpenAI enough confidence to now — also — explore a paid version.
It comes as no surprise that the chatbot has triggered a rise in the stakes in Mountain View, and that CEO Sundar Pichai is asking Larry Page and Sergey Brin to tackle Google’s artificial intelligence projects.

As reported by the New York Times, Google plans to “demonstrate a chatbot version of its search engine this year” and is developing more than 20 artificial intelligence products to counter ChatGPT. During the upcoming Google I/O developer conference in 2023, more details are expected to be revealed.
This news has led Gmail’s creator Paul Buccheit to opine that ChatGPT has the potential to destroy Google in a year or two at max. According to him, “google may be only a year or two away from a total disruption. Their business will be irrevocably changed by AI and “even if they catch up on AI they can’t fully deploy it without destroying the most valuable part of their business!”
There are indications ChatGPT could potentially be a game-changer for Google as it continues to develop cutting-edge AI technology. If Google is slow in developing its own AI technology, the company risks facing a serious threat to its search engine business, which is its most profitable business. So it could be used for more customer service tools, cutting the need for humans. Google is set to see a sharp decline in market share both on their Google search engine as well as with other strategies they use.
What does this mean for the future?

The destruction of Google, which ChatGPT has proven to be able to accomplish with staggering numbers, could significantly alter the future of AI.
Experts believe that the lack of hesitation in the development of ChatGPT for chatbots (developed by OpenAI) may mean that Google has limited their creativity, and without taking care of that now, they could go under entirely within the next few years.
Until Google releases more details at their 2023 I/O developer conference, we can’t predict what the future of search, AI, and Google is.
