Making wine at home is easy, as long as you take safety precautions of course (I got into an accident once while making alcohol, don't ask why 😒). With a few steps and lots of patience, you are able to make your wine at home.
Required:
- Grapes (any kind that is sweet)
- Bottle with a cap (with small holes punctured on the cap)
- Another bottle (to transfer your filtered out wine)
- Some teabag filter (preventing dust or other unwanted objects from entering you wine during fermentation)
- Strainer (to filter out grape seeds and skin)
You may also have some sugar and yeast to add it in during fermentation but the natural sugars and yeast present in the grapes should be enough for the job.
Day 0:
- Wash grapes
- Cur and remove grape seeds (you can leave the seeds in if you choose to but it may taste slightly bitter later on)
- Squeeze grape juice into a clean bottle
- Cap bottle, place teabag filter on top of the cap and make sure it is securely held
- Optional: add yeast
- Leave it to ferment (~2 weeks)
Day 14 (week 2):
- Transfer the juice (that has turned into wine) into a new bottle while filtering out the skin using any method you want like a strainer
- Optional: add sugar and mix it in and then bottle the wine with a cap that has no holes will give you a wine that will provide some sparkle to your wine later on.
- Otherwise, use a bottle with a cap that has holes and place a teabag filter on the cap.
From then on, you may let it age as long as you want but for a sparkling wine, you may wish to release some of the gas being built up in the wine often to prevent accidents.
