You can do anything on Linux that you can do on Windows, except some Windows games and software might not work well with WINE which runs Windows Programs on Linux.
You can put home movies or any video you download on DVD with devedeng and handbrake and avidemux3
You can create audio files from videos or edit audio files easily with Audacity
Most science is done on Unix or Linux and there is a science based flavor of Linux
Linux has been lucky that not many people at all hack viruses for Linux so for now you don't have to worry about Viruses on Linux AND the way Linux's security works, it makes it that much harder for the hacker to code a virus for Linux.
