The idea of becoming more and doing better is one that often runs rampant in our heads.
We see it all around society. 'Be better, make more money, become more beautiful, etc.'
But these messages are often subconsciously also telling us that we are not good enough where we are.
There's a difference between saying,
"Well, an extra $1000 a month would free up time and give me more opportunity."
versus
"I need an extra $1000 a month. How can I keep up with the world? God I feel like this is impossible."
Although these words may seem embellished or exagerrated, they're pretty accurate to the subconscious thoughts we have on a daily basis. It is up to us to understand ourselves and the way we think in order to not fall victim to attaching negativity with advancement, and shame with where we are in the present moment.
It is natural for us to desire growth and expansion, but we must do it on our own terms if we want it to be healthy and happy growth.
Getting Past the Ego
Sometimes, ego gets in the way and wants us to improve in order to be better than others, or because we feel we're not good enough where we are. To get passed the ego, we have to take an objective look at ourselves and realize we are much more than the "self" who has acquired experiences and created beliefs about reality, but that we are infinite in our approach to be anything and create anything.
It is often our ego which holds us back from healthy growth, or which will push us in a direction that isn't truly our heart's path. Because we absorb everything around us as children, we enter into our adult lives with the neural pathways we created in our childhood experience, and use these beliefs to express ourselves in the world around us. If we don't look at the subconscious motivations behind our actions, we may find that we are moving on a path with a dead end.
There have been many times in my life where I can look back and see that I was motivated not from my heart, but from my ego. I remember acting different to fit in, going to a college to make my parents happy, and working a job that I hated but had security, just to name a few. Each of these situations had one thing in common: I was creating my life to fit the template of what my mind and ego believed I needed to be a valid and acceptable member of this society.
All of those experiences were short-lived however, as my heart had a different path, and forced me to look at my subconscious for the answers and to move beyond the realities which weren't truly serving my soul's growth and expansion.
Truly, everything is fine where we are right now.
We are loved, we are beautiful, and perfectly imperfect without making changes. This is key to be able to release the burden of our ego's desires and to be ok with exactly where we are today. When you can let go of the "push" of the ego to do this, or to do that, then you can finally relax and catch your breath.
It's similar to running on a treadmill. Our ego wants us to keep going and going, chasing the goal in front of us, but if we look down, we realize we haven't moved anywhere in space. In comparison, our hearts want us to run outside, and to truly move through space with the freedom and the fresh air of the world around us.
The truth is, if you let go of the ego, your heart's messages will become louder. What starts as a whisper becomes more audible the more you tune in. Your heart will tell you that you are doing great where you are right now, that you are beautiful, loved, intelligent, and have the ability to co-create the life you choose.
Is there any rush? No, not with the heart. The heart says, "Take all the time you need."
Growing Through the Heart
We do have this opportunity to express more, to allow more, to give more and to love more, and as we listen to our hearts, we'll find that this upward climb of self expression and growth is a million times easier than the path of the ego.
The difference is the ego wants us walking up hill, whereas the heart gives us some downhill action from time to time for us to catch our breath. Sure, things get hard at times, but every single step on the heart's path feels like an accomplishment, because internally we can feel ourselves growing on a spiritual level and not just a material one.
By advancing through the heart, we uncover new talents and abilities, and new realities we never knew were possible through the old patterns. Age is no limitation, for there are treasures waiting in all of us to be expressed, we just have to listen to our hearts. Doing so doesn't negate who we were with past actions, but only enforces how we are co-creating our realities and using our God given gifts.
You are perfect just the way you are.
