Dear Friends,

Movie: A TIME TO KILL

In a village located in the American South—a region rife with racial discrimination—Carl Lee’s ten-year-old daughter, Tonya, is sexually assaulted and left for dead by two drunken white youths. Tonya survives the attack, though she suffers severe physical and psychological trauma.

Lee approaches Jake, a white attorney, and asks if there is any possibility that the youths might escape justice. When Jake confirms that such a possibility exists, Lee requests that he represent him in court. Jake’s family is a small one, consisting of himself, his wife, and their ten-year-old daughter, Hannah.
The very next day, as the youths are being brought into the courthouse, Lee opens fire on them with a machine gun, gunning them both down in a hail of bullets. A stray bullet strikes a security guard in the leg, resulting in the loss of his limb.

Now, the entire white community is clamoring for Lee to be sentenced to death. The trial is presided over by a white judge and a jury composed entirely of white individuals. The Ku Klux Klan—a white supremacist terrorist organisation—takes a keen and aggressive interest in the case. They threaten Jake, warning him not to represent Lee, and subsequently set fire to his home. Jake’s family is pushed to the brink of disintegration. They even abduct Jake’s assistant, Sandra Bullock and attempt to kill her. Meanwhile, the trial itself is proceeding in a heavily biased manner. All attempts to establish that Lee acted in a state of temporary insanity prove futile. The following day is Judgment Day.

Jake visits Lee in prison. At that moment, Lee speaks at length, saying, "No matter how conscientiously you support my position, you haven't truly thought about it from my perspective. There is a massive wall spanning across America. You are on one side of that wall; we are on the other. Is it truly possible for your daughter, Hannah, and my daughter, Tonya, to play together?"

The following day in court, both sides present their closing arguments.

Outside the courthouse, members of the Ku Klux Klan and the Black community stand poised for a violent clash. Inside, the verdict is being delivered.
You will have to watch the film to discover what that verdict is—and how it unfolds.

Courtroom dramas invariably make for engaging cinema.

This film, too, navigates its narrative closely around standard courtroom procedures. It moves along splendidly, featuring compelling arguments and counter-arguments, as well as witnesses being dismantled through cross-examination. Furthermore, the film does an excellent job of exposing the deep-seated racial prejudice that has long festered within American society.

Everyone in the cast delivered very good and stellar performance, and the dialogue is truly outstanding.

The film is available on Netflix;

Watch it over your free time to get this experience. .
