I made it to Dubai for Sui Basecamp and some other crypto stuff.
Here's my night so far.
I landed late in the evening and waited for a shuttle bus which was supposedly supposed (sorry) to take me to my hotel.
Except, it didn't. It wasn't there.
I asked two separate people - both shuttle drivers but for other hotels.
The first guy told me to just wait and it'll come.
The second guy, after I'd already waited 45 minutes, told me "there's no shuttle for that hotel today, better take a cab".
Right.
So I ordered a Bolt, which cost way too much for less than three miles but whatever.
I got to my hotel and there were like 50+ people in line for check-in... and only one receptionist to check everyone in.
I waited for about 45 seconds, which is 45 seconds more than I intended to, and then I asked, "is there a bar I can go to? I'll check in later".
She said yes, there was. She said it was upstairs. So I went, had a couple of beers and asked for the bill.
The waitress said, "sure, are you staying at the hotel?"
Trick question, I thought.
"Yes, but I'm not checked in yet, why?" I asked.
"There's a 25 percent discount for hotel guests. But we need a room number."
Oh give me a break.
So I said, "please bring another beer and wait a sec for the check. I'll go back downstairs and check myself in and will be back with a room number."
Which I did. I'm now having my second beer and will presumably get that 25 percent discount which, in a place like Dubai where is so foooooooooking expensive, ain't a bad deal.
Tough life. But somebody gotta live it.
