Should this be illegal?

Like most people, I'm on social media.

Like most people, my social media feed is full of stuff I'm not particularly interested in.

But unfortunately, like most people, I do react to what's on my feed because that's how the human brain works, whether we like it or not.

I was doom-scrolling (I know, sorry) when I found a guy with a sizeable following who's been documenting his 'journey' recovering from limb-lengthening surgery.

Translated? Bro wanted to be taller.

Let's start with the practical stuff, we'll get to the ethical stuff later.

First, if you're 5 foot 8 and lengthen your legs to make you 6 foot 3, you'll simply be a 5'8'' person with 6'3'' legs.

Your head, your neck, your torso, your hands, your arms - it'll all be comically too short for your legs.

Feet could potentially be a problem but it's all relative. Several footballers (for example) have proportionately small feet.

Second, you're probably never going to run again, and you're certainly never going to be able to play sports at any level again.

Third, it'll take years just to relearn how to walk properly.

Some people think this is morally wrong, and I agree.

Fake hair or fake teeth or a fake nose or fake boobs are harmless to everyone else.

But deliberately making yourself crippled when there are people with real disabilities who'd give anything to be able to walk or run is immoral, and wrong.

But should this type of surgery be illegal?

I gave it some thought and I concluded that my answer is, unfortunately, no.

While I do believe this shouldn't exist, the fact of the matter is that some people want to do this, and keeping it legal keeps it regulated. And while it is morally wrong, it doesn't directly or even indirectly affect or harm anyone else but them.

If made illegal, people would probably still do it anyway, probably in some dodgy parts of the world, with probably worse consequences.

But that's my opinion today. I may change it tomorrow. The jury is still out.
