Google Carbon Vs C++, What is New

Carbon is a general-purpose programming language created at Google to be a "C++ successor language."

It was announced at the CppNorth conference recently, and it has gotten the developer's community buzzing. Many questions abound as to what the language will change and its syntax.    According to the screenshot on Twitter, Chandler Carruth, he was clear that Carbon would fix the several shortcomings of C++; however, it shows more similarities than an upgrade to C++.    Here are some of the features of Carbon

  • Readability
  • Simpler grammar and smoother API imports
  • bi-directional interoperability

While the language will be designed and developed on GitHub, a consensus community will take decisions.

The language will be an open-source project.   Google wants to drop its support by 50%, given the project is run by volunteers and a discord channel to raise and talk about it.

While Carbon programming language sounds amazing, many developers ask what difference it makes and why it would be revolutionary.

The article points out that Carbon will boast modern features like generics and memory safety (including dynamic bounds checks).

The development team wants to create a built-in package manager that C++ lacks.   However, some would argue that C++ is a general-purpose programming language used for competitive programming.

C++ runs, and it's the base for most applications. Ninety-seven percent of the world's most powerful supercomputers run the Linux kernel.    C++ is one of the oldest and most effective languages that continue to dominate the realm of programming.

While Carbon is still under development, the Google team wants to release version 0.1 by the end of the year.

Conclusion

I believe there is a need to scale up on what we have on C++, but having a replacement for C++ will be a difficult switch for most developers. However, December is just some months away.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope to see what Google Carbon does next.
