A couple of years ago, a friend asked me:
“What’s your dream?”
And I said the most honest thing I could at the time:
“I don’t know.”
That wasn’t a lie. I genuinely didn’t know what I wanted.
See, I’m from Sri Lanka — a country rooted deeply in culture, tradition, and honestly… a lot of outdated thinking. From the time we were kids, all we ever heard were the same recycled words:
Doctor. Engineer. Lawyer.
That’s it. That was the “menu.”
No one told us there was a whole damn buffet of dreams out there.
We were locked into that tiny box, and we thought that was all we could ever be.
So back then, if someone asked me what I wanted to be, I’d just say:
“An engineer.”
Not because I wanted to. But because… I didn’t know I could want anything else.
But Then I Learned Something Huge
I discovered that the world is full of possibilities. There are creators, coders, athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, travelers, leaders — all doing what they love.
And when I saw that… it shook me.
But by then, it felt too late.
I was already locked in.
Strict family. Expectations. The classic Asian household pressure.
You know how it is.
Right now, I’m a Sri Lankan GCE A/L student taking Maths, Physics, and Chemistry.
Do I love it? maybe yes, maybe not.
But I’m here.
And I’ve decided to finish what I started.
What’s My Dream Now?
If someone asks me again today, I might still say,
“Become an engineer.”
But if they ask me, “What’s your real dream?”
Now that would be a totally different answer.
Because here’s the truth:
⚡ Sometimes in life, you don’t get to do what you love.
⚡ Sometimes you just gotta do what’s right — whether you love it or not.
⚡ And that’s okay.
Not everyone will agree with that. Some will say "follow your passion."
I get it.
But this is my reality.
And maybe it’s yours too.
Why You Need a Dream — Now More Than Ever
In this brutal, chaotic race called life, a dream is the one thing that keeps you going.
It’s your spark. Your fire. Your why.
It gives you direction.
Purpose.
And a damn good reason to wake up and fight again tomorrow.
Here’s what I learned:
“A person without a dream is just a living vessel.”
Your dream might evolve. It might change. And that’s totally okay.
But you’ve gotta have one.
Because when you’re about to give up, that dream will remind you why you started.
A Quick Tip for Procrastinators:
If you're wasting time — bingeing shows, gaming, scrolling endlessly — pause.
Just ask yourself:
“Would this help me reach my dream?”
If the answer is no (and it usually is)...
GET UP. WORK. BUILD IT.
No one else is gonna do it for you.
Final Words From a Student Still in the Trenches:
Life is a race.
You’ll fall. You’ll lose track. You’ll hate yourself some days.
But the only way forward is to get back up, gather yourself, and run harder.
So I’m telling you this, from one student to another:
✨ Be brave enough to chase what you love.
🔥 Be disciplined enough to do what’s right.
💯 And be real enough to believe in yourself — even if no one else does.
I believe in you.
And one day — when the dust settles, when the grades are in, when the dreams become real —
We’ll all rise. And we’ll celebrate like kings. 👑
