The countdown has been launched for the second of the Proof of Keys event, spearheaded by Trace Mayer, one of the early bitcoin investors, which aims to boycott users from granting custody of cryptocurrencies to third parties outside the circumstances and times required. Mayer had first led this event last year, calling on attendees to withdraw their BTC from exchanges on January 3, the anniversary of Bitcoin's first block.

Mayer is now preparing cryptocurrency investors for the second of this event. Posting a video on his personal Twitter account yesterday, Mayer invited everyone to participate in a social media campaign to be held in 2020, citing the inability of users to withdraw their money from Einstein, the Canadian-based cryptocurrency exchange, and various other examples.

Less than 60 days until #ProofOfKeys. Who is participating in 2020? Change your handle yet? [Jan/3➞₿∎] 💪 Just recently "Einstein Crypto Exchange Seized by Canadian Securities Regulator." $850m of @Tether_to seized with Crypto Capital. QuadrigaCX last year. #MtGox, et. al.

The campaign, which aims to raise awareness, also brings a number of risks. If the campaign grows, January 3 withdraws from exchanges could create a pile-up in the blockchain, and transaction fees could rise. Moreover, exchanges that carry a large portion of BTCs in cold wallets will make transfers to hot wallets in line with demand from users, making these platforms target of hackers.
