Cloudflare announces cryptocurrency wallet for humans and AI

Cloudflare Wallets creates two types of wallets: Account Wallets for humans and Virtual Wallets for AI agents. It integrates the x402 protocol and Monetization Gateway to form a two-sided agentic marketplace.

Cloudflare announced on Tuesday (4) the launch of Cloudflare Wallets, a cryptocurrency wallet designed specifically for AI agents to make autonomous payments on the web.

The product allows agents to purchase access to APIs, services, and content without having to go through login flows designed for humans or wait for manual approval for each transaction.

The launch is part of a broader architecture that Cloudflare is building for what it calls "agentic commerce" : a marketplace where buyers and sellers are increasingly automated  systems , not people.

The problem that the wallet solves

Today, when an AI agent needs to access a paid API, it faces two practical obstacles. First, the registration page was designed for humans: it requires clicks, captchas, and visual flows that agents cannot navigate autonomously. Second, someone needs to manually enter the payment data before generating an API key.

“To solve this problem, we created Cloudflare Wallets,” the company explained on its blog. “Starting today, you can claim a Cloudflare Wallet identifier for your account, which will provide a unique username to make it easier to connect with merchants.”

The wallet will allow users to store stablecoins , purchase services, and receive funds online, with deposits and withdrawals initially available for supported regions.

Two types of portfolio: humans and agents.

The product design deliberately separates human control from agent autonomy with precision.

  • Account Wallets are designed for human users . They allow users to add funds, set spending limits, and delegate permissions to agents. They are the control point of the operation.
  • Virtual Wallets are designed for AI agents and operate via API keys. Within a Virtual Wallet, the agent can spend according to the permissions granted , with a maximum limit set by the Wallet Account owner.

Cloudflare used a straightforward example to illustrate the logic: $10 is sufficient for an AI agent to test APIs that cost a few cents . With this limit, the owner gives the agent autonomy without exposing significant funds to risk. The agent acts freely within the authorized range. If it needs more, the Account Wallet needs to be adjusted manually.

This model has direct implications for security: it limits the potential damage if an agent is compromised or begins to exhibit reward hacking behavior, a phenomenon documented by MIT Technology Review where agents seek to maximize objectives through unauthorized means.

The ecosystem: Monetization Gateway and x402 protocol

Cloudflare Wallets is not a standalone product. It integrates with two other components recently released by the company.

The Monetization Gateway , announced on August 1st, allows Cloudflare customers to receive payments through their websites and APIs without setting up traditional payment infrastructure. It functions like the seller's side of the agentic marketplace .

The x402 protocol , supported by Cloudflare since 2025 in partnership with Coinbase, is the underlying payment standard that enables on-chain micropayments in stablecoins for access to web resources . It is the equivalent of the HTTP protocol for native internet payments, but geared towards transactions between agents and services.

Together, the three components form what Cloudflare describes as "a two-sided agentic marketplace": Wallets for automated buyers, the Monetization Gateway for sellers, and x402 as the communication protocol between them.

The unresolved identity problem

Cloudflare also pointed out a challenge that the product does not yet fully solve: the identification of AI agents by websites and services.

Currently, when an agent accesses a service, little is known about who they represent. This makes it difficult for salespeople to offer benefits such as free trials or registration credits, which typically depend on knowing who is on the other end.

The proposed solution is to link wallets to a Cloudflare account via cloudflare.pay, creating consistent and permanent identities for agents. Identification will remain optional, but sellers will be able to choose to prioritize transactions from identified agents.

“At Cloudflare, we want to offer all the fundamental building blocks for agentic commerce to succeed,” the company stated. “The Monetization Gateway will provide a way for sellers to receive payments. Wallets will allow buyers to pay automatically through agents. And the identity system will allow merchants to communicate with identified buyers.”

It's worth noting that Cloudflare is also developing its own stablecoin, the NET Dollar , announced for 2025. Cloudflare Wallets may eventually become the primary distribution channel for this asset.
