BitPay Prepaid Visa®

“The BitPay Prepaid Visa® is a reloadable prepaid debit card, not a credit card. This means you can’t spend more than the balance at any given time” (source).  The BitPay Prepaid Visa can be used to purchase goods and services at any location that accepts traditional Visa payments.

Merchant Settlements: There is no need to worry about volatility as the settling price can be chosen in a number of local currencies.  Merchants can also choose cryptocurrency and even split supported fiat crypto settlement options.  At present cryptocurrency settlement options include Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), as well as Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Paxos (PAX), and Circle USD Coin (USDC) stable coins.  Supported fiats include Australian Dollars, Euros, British Pounds Stirling, Mexican Pesos, New Zealand Dollars, United States Dollars, and South African Rand.  BitBay also supports direct deposit in 37 countries and supported settlements in over 200 (source).

Merchant Fees: A fee of 1% of the final sale price goes to BitPay.  This is at present lower than what a regular visa card at 1.5% would be.  Although there is no customer fee for utilization of the BitPay prepaid debit card, merchants do have the option to pass along the 1% service fee they incur on to the users (source).

BitPay prepaid cryptocurrency and Bitcoin debit card for USA residents only: Because it is a reloadable prepaid debit card and subject to US standardized banking law, full name, residential address, birthdate, social security number, and phone number are required for registration purposes (source).  The card itself is provided through the Metropolitan Commercial Bank and is available and supported in all 50 states.  Due to excessive regulations at present, the BitPay prepaid Visa seems to have a special advantage over many other cards in this list in regards to Bitcoin debit card USA usability and adoption. 

BitPay prepaid debit card initial cost: $9.95 USD payable in BTC or BCH

BitPay prepaid debit card limits and fees: There is a maximum upload limit on the card of $25,000 USD.  The card has a daily withdrawal limit of $3,000 USD, and up to $10,000 USD can be both uploaded and charged to the card on a daily basis.  For more on card holder fees and transfer limits please refer to the official BitPay Fee Schedule pdf chart.

Funding the BitPay prepaid debit card: Although there are multiple options to fund the BitPay prepaid debit card balance, by far the simplest and most convenient is utilization of cryptocurrency deposit via a connected BitPay wallet.  BitPay is usable on iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux and apps can be downloaded by following the link from the official BitPay Wallet webpage (

In addition to using the official BitPay wallet, users can also top up account funds of their BitPay Bitcoin debit card in USA via direct deposit and ACH credit.

Using the BitPay prepaid debit card: As you may have already guessed from the previous information, the BitPay debit card be used just about anywhere a regular visa or debit card can be used including ATM’s, in brick and mortar shops, and online.

BitPay Wallet: The BitPay non-custodial secure wallet is usable on iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux and apps can be downloaded by following the link from the official BitPay Wallet webpage (  It should also be noted that although only residents of the US can at present order the BitPay prepaid visa, the non custodial wallet and app services are available to residents of many other countries throughout the world.
