Ah, travelling. One of life’s many wondrous things. If you love to travel then you know just as well as I do the impact that it can have on your bank account. Seeing the Himalayas, looking out over the great wall of China and exploring the hidden nooks and crannies tucked away in European cities is all well and good if we have the financial stability to do so. Many people do budgeting trips, sleep on other peoples sofas and pick up some farming work while travelling the world. But what if there was another way that we could make money while travelling?

This article will look at some of the popular ways that people are making money while travelling. It will explore some of that way to keep costs low, to run an online business and to make your travel-working business a success.

Keeping travel costs low

Once you have started your business and you are ready to set off on your first adventure you will need to ensure that you have a financial plan in place. Don’t overestimate how much money you are going to make, and don’t go unless you are sure that you are making enough. There is nothing worse than having to come home because you haven't budgeted properly. Consider going on shorter trips first to work out how much it costs you to live while you are travelling. Be savvy and use cheap airport parking options, flight comparison sites and affordable accommodation finders. This will ensure that you budgeting your business realistically.

What do you want to do online?

First things first, make sure that you do some research into what it is that you would actually like to do online. There are a lot of avenues for making money on the web, so which one will you pursue? Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling:

  • Start a blog: this can be a lucrative area if done properly. Making money from your blog often takes a lot of time to do, and it can be a lot of work as well. Make sure that you have the dedication that is needed.
  • Offer copywriting services: you can make good money doing freelance copywriting for businesses on the internet. Simply sign up to places like People Per Hour or Fiverr.com and start creating your profile and pitching to clients.
  • Dropshipping: Setting up an online shop that doesn't require you to hold any of the stock is another great way to make money online. This is another option that takes time though. As they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch!

Getting the right insurance

Don't head out of your travels with an expensive laptop and tablet without getting the proper insurance. Things can go wrong while you are traveling, and making sure that you have everything backed up and properly insured is imperative. After all, you can't continue on your travels with no laptop or way of accessing your online business.

Keeping your work and life balance

It can be all too easy to forget the work while you are travelling. There is so much to do and so much to see that you may just forget about all of the work that you have to do. Schedule when you will be working and when you will be out exploring. This will ensure that you are keeping a realistic work/life balance.

Online tools to keep you in check

Here are a few online tools that you can use to help keep your balance in check.

  • Online banking: Make sure that you are constantly checking that your finances are correct. You can create your own excel spreadsheet to record your finances or you can keep an eye on your online banking. You can even get apps to help you track your spending.
  • Online calendars: Keep your online calendar updated regularly with what you are doing and when. Make sure that you stick to this calendar and schedule in enough time to explore and have fun, and enough time to knuckle down and make money!
  • Notion or team planning: if you have more than one person involved in your business then set up a notion (a team-oriented task management system) or a community accessed planning system. This way you can keep track of what the entire team is doing, and ensure that they are keeping to the schedule too!

Travelling is a really fun experience, and it is a great way to learn about the world, but running an online business takes a lot of work. If you think that you can do it, then go ahead and take the plunge. It will be a very rewarding career path to follow. But just remember that it will take work, so having the passion and the discipline to follow this dream is imperative.

Consider your online business, take out insurance, budget properly and keep your work/life balance in check! Happy travelling!
