For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by the idea of creating my own country and how / why borders and countries are formed in general. After my visit to the Vatican a few years back I was shellshocked to hear that it is not officially part of Rome, but it's own Micro State and then my trip to Bosnia the following year I was amazed at the fact that I had to go through the Republic of Srpska, which is located in the original boarders of Bosnia and Herzegovina but uses the Serbian language, has a different major religion in the area and is another passport checkpoint for tourist.

I recently discovered a rather interesting project, but firstly what is a Micro Nation / State?

Micro State vs Micro Nation what's the difference?

There is some debate on what should be considered a Micro Nation / Micro State to begin with, but let's try to keep this simple.

A nice definition of a Micro State that i found is:-

"modern protected states, i.e. sovereign states that have been able to unilaterally depute certain attributes of sovereignty to larger powers in exchange for benign protection of their political and economic viability against their geographic or demographic constraints."

You might have visited a micro State as there are quite a few of them dotted all over Europe. Some examples are Luxembourg, Monaco, San Marino and The Vatican City.

A Micro Nation is a entity that is trying to become a Micro State, as Micro States are recognised by world governments and major international organisations.

Liberland

Liberland is a sovereign state located between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube River. On some maps, this area is referred to as “Gornja Siga.” The nearest towns are Zmajevac (Croatia) and Bački Monoštor (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia).

This parcel of land came into existence due to a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. This area is not claimed by Croatia, Serbia, nor any other nation or private entity. Furthermore, it remained unclaimed since the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991. In fact, for many decades, it has been uninhabited and no claim was ever made to this piece of land. It was therefore Terra Nullius – a no man’s land – until Vít Jedlička and Jana Markovicova proclaimed it as the Free Republic of Liberland on April 13, 2015. Liberland has set its boundary with ample margin from neighbouring countries to ensure that it does not infringe upon the territory of Croatia or Serbia. The total area is approximately 7 km² and is now the third smallest sovereign state, after the Vatican and Monaco.

Their motto is “To Live and Let Live”, following the rules of free trade and free market with absolute minimal State interference into people’s lives and business activities. Historically, this model has brought the highest level of development to societies, as demonstrated in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Monaco.

Blockchain Nation

What really intrigues me about this Micro Nation is that Liberland is 3 times the size of Monaco with already has 500,000 registered users and 100,000 eligible citizenship applications. Also they are aiming to be the first sovereign nation in history, that will be based on a tokenised statehood model, where social freedoms are fixed in unchangeable, unmodifiable, through smart contracts. On top of that, the Liberland Merit is the all-in-one crypto asset that represents the holder’s voting power, currency, and collateral for a decentralised justice system.
