Amazon Sidewalk IS HERE!

Amazon Sidewalk has just launched. When taken in without proper research it seems alarming if not downright frightening. There are many articles already written regarding Amazon Sidewalk and how it will share your internet with strangers nearby. With digital security of upmost importance now (and forever) this seems like an incredibly bad idea. But there must be something behind it, right?

Starting today 6/8/21, Sidewalk will go live, and will allow compatible devices to connect anonymously to other compatible devices and share its connection. Amazon says it's designed with multiple layers of encryption. The idea is that now, with many devices needing to always have an internet connection to function or to function at its optimal level, this will help alleviate connection issues. 'Cause what good is my Ring camera if it loses its WIFI signal and misses recording exactly the five minutes that I needed? Compatible devices include the very popular Amazon Echo devices and aforementioned Ring Spotlight Cams.

If all goes as planned, Sidewalk could usher in a new era of interconnectedness in the digital world. If it doesn’t go as planned this can be catastrophic because someone is always looking to exploit any new tech for nefarious reasons.

Compatible devices automatically have Sidewalk enabled. You can turn it off fairly easily. I, for one, have opted out for now. Let’s see how it goes.
