Everyone has quit something. In fact, you could probably sit there now and name several things you have quit recently. Whether it was that fitness goal you set on new years, or that home project you just gave up one. Or maybe it's something bigger like starting a side hustle.
We all struggle with quitting. Why? Because it's the easy option. We hit a barrier and 9/10 times we decide that it would just be easier if we just gave up and move on. But then we find ourselves in the same situation with the next thing. And unless you do something about it, it never stops. We never end up achieving our goals in life.
I have always struggled with not giving up. I have great ideas, do loads of work setting things up but then I convince myself that it will fail and not work and I quit. Not realising that by quitting, I have made it FAIL!!
So, how do we fix this? How do we stop the failure and NEVER QUIT?
Here are 8 strategies I have found that help me stay focused and keep on going.
#1 Find your WHY
When you go about setting yourself goals or projects or anything, first you need to ask yourself, WHY.
- Why do I want to do this?
By doing this and writing it down you give yourself a clear reason for achieving your goal.
Maybe your goal is to reach a certain body fat percentage or start making some extra money on the side. Your WHY answers maybe that you want to feel more comfortable and confident in the way you look or when you go on that beach holiday. Or maybe it's so you can have some extra cash to be able to go on that trip you've always wanted to go on.
Starting with WHY will give you a clear starting point to build on.
#2 Ask yourself HOW
Now that you've found you WHY, you now need to find your HOW.
- How am I going to reach this goal?
This step will take a bit of time and thought.
Write down all the different steps you could take to achieve your goals. Do the research. Get some perspective.
Once you have done this, you will be able to see a route you can take that will guide you to achieving your goal.
#3 Tackle one goal at a time
So many of us get so caught up in multiple goals and tasks that we fail to achieve anything. Multitasking is seen as a skill that breeds success.
But actually, it's the opposite.
It breeds failure.
It is 100% impossible for the brain to focus on multiple tasks at the same time. IMPOSSIBLE. Instead of multi tasking, what you are actually doing, is just switching your focus from one thing to the other and never actually giving your brain time to really get going.
So you need to pick one of your goals and focus on achieving that goal first. Stick with that one goal and give it all of your focus and attention. Once that one is complete or well on it's way, you can being tackling another goal until completion. This then will allow you to really get stuck in and give it your full attention and energy therefore increasing our chances of achieving you goals.
#4 Track your progress
Tracking progress is a must have. Without tracking, there is no way to be able to see the progress you are making.
Keep a record of what you have achieved towards your chosen goal on a regular basis, whether weekly or monthly. This won't only help you see progress, but also motivate you to keep going having proof that progress is happening no matter how small.
Also, it will help you to identify mistakes or errors you have made that you can make adjustments for.
#5 Learn from your mistakes
Mistakes always happen. No plan is ever perfect. No route you take will ever be taken without hiccups and mistakes.
But it's what we do with those mistakes that will determine whether or not we will reach our goals.
Albert Einstein once said:
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome."
When mistakes are made, or failure happens, we need to look back and assess what went wrong. You need to identify areas where you can make changes and then try it. If it fails again, change something else.
If, for example, your goal is to loose body fat and your exercising regularly and eating healthily but your not getting the results you want, you don't just carry on as you are and hope for the best. Instead, you take the time to look at what you are doing and identify areas you can make adjustments and see if that makes a difference.
Don't let the mistakes and failures stop you just because it didn't work. Analyse, adjust and take the next step.
#6 NEVER GIVE UP!!!
This one goes without saying. Perseverance is key to achieving anything in life. Anyone can take the easy road and just give up whining about how "it just wasn't write for me" or "I'm not good enough."
Well that's a load of rubbish. ANYONE CAN DO ANYTHING.
Don't let yourself be put down by your own limitations or those of the people around you. Yes, there will always be negative people around you who don't believe your goals and dreams are possible, but I bet 9 times out 10, they believe that because they are actually jealous of the fact that you are doing and achieving more than them.
KEEP ON RUNING THE RACE.
NEVER STOP CHASING THE DREAM!!!
