Male guppies are horny, aggressive SOBs!
In coed tanks, it's recommended to have three female guppies to every male guppy. Why? Because of the constant sexual harassment perpetrated by the male guppies onto the females, anything less than a 3::1 ratio results in stressed out, exhausted, sick and dead female guppies.
Furthermore, when male guppies mature, they switch into "Flare, Fight or Flee" mode - for the rest of their lives. If not distracted by enough tail-chasing action, too many male guppies in one tank results in Guppy Armageddon (not a pretty sight; battleground is littered with a mass of fallen, horny, top guy wannabe warriors).
Inevitably, when my Double Sword tail/Half Black Emerald Blue hybrids mature enough to start a ruckus, I separate them into their own min-habitats (DYI confinement chambers made from repurposed 1.5 plastic Coke Zero bottles).
