When Swimming Against the Mainstream
Those who go against the predominant and stubbornly entrenched mainstream opinion always face a long road of criticism, chastisement and even ostracism from peers.
This happens in every field of endeavor (e.g., Velikovsky and his Cosmology of Colliding Planets, Tesla and AC electricity, and Faraday and his theories of electromagnetism).

J. Harlen Bretz (September 2, 1882 – February 3, 1981) was an American geologist who, in spite of years of resistance and ridicule, stuck to his guns and staunchly promoted his Catastrophic Floods theory until vindication thirty years later - by the same community who previously discounted him as a crackpot.

In the summer of 1922, and for the next seven years, Bretz conducted field research of the Columbia River Plateau. Since 1910 he had been interested in unusual erosion features in the area after seeing a newly published topographic map of the Potholes Cataract.
Bretz coined the term Channeled Scablands in 1923 to describe the area near the Grand Coulee, where massive erosion had cut through basalt deposits.
The area was a desert, but Bretz's theories required cataclysmic water flows to form the landscape, for which Bretz coined the term Spokane Floods in a 1925 publication.
"A Great Flood? That's Biblical Nonsense!"
Publishing a paper in 1923, Bretz submitted his theory that the channeled scablands must have been caused by massive flooding thousands of years ago.
To the Geology community, this was "Scientific Heresy" and hearkened to the dark ages of believing in "The Great flood" and "Noah's Ark".
In other words, the prevailing geologic theories embraced uniformitarianism and small, continuous changes over long periods of time.
Bretz's views of abrupt and cataclysmic changes were initially discredited.
But as the insights of the Ice Age emerged, Bretz's original research was totally vindicated.

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.
In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.
After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.
