Up until now, Blockchain has been a hostile space for creatives like myself, with a steep learning curve and a user interface reminiscent of DOS it has created a high barrier of entry and has continued to deter those not so technically inclined from participating. But all of that, it's about to change.
To many in the space, the very mention of the acronym DAO brings us back to a fatal flaw of epic proportions, almost on par with its two syllable cousin, Mt Gox - The DAO. It was hard lesson to swallow, but a lesson nonetheless and we have emerged better equipped and no worse for the wear. So much has changed since 2016 that it's hard to put it all into perspective without having experienced it first hand, which I must admit, I have hadn't.
On November 20th 2019 a crypto-buddy-of-mine held a workshop on "How Blockchain can create more sustainable trustworthy organizations" and I attended, as I do for most of the crypto events going on in Kuala Lumpur. My buddy (Jason) had just returned from Devcon 5 in Osaka inspired to share his experience with the Malaysian community and everything he had learned about DAOs. His enthusiasm was infectious.
Yup, that's me on the far right asking the tough questions as we went through the DAO Canvas exercise. See, you can read all you want, but there's nothing like actually participating to get those creative juices flowing. And flow they did. I returned home and immediately hit my notepad exploring ideas on how to implement the concepts and use-cases of DAO into the community activism within the Hip Hop scene I'd been doing for almost 2 decades.
Say What? Rewind Selekta!
For a quick taste of context, I'd embarked on a mission to bring together Hip Hop & Blockchain that started not long after my infatuation began in early 2017. I went from recording my first Crypto Rap (yes, I'm an emcee) to travelling to Puerto Rico in the hopes of getting my project Hip Hop The Blockchain funded by Brock Pierce, a story for another day. But hey!

Back To The Subject At Hand
Overflowing with ideas I dove into the "Stack" and began devouring all the information I could about my selection for BestDapp - DAOstack
The idea that I could, or at least try to, implement a new form of decentralized governance into the community building I'd been doing had me sleepless those first few nights as I scribbled away in my notepad (analog) until I finally made the effort to jump in and get involved with the community. Through DAOstack, I learned about Genesis DAO, one of the core projects on the platform that empowers the creation of more DAOs in the DAOstack ecosystem. As I mentioned my background to the members I was prompted to join the discussion in the DAOFest Telegram channel, which was better suited to the type of project I'd come up with.
Since joining the community a few weeks ago I am proud to say I've submitted my very first proposal to the DAO and it was approved! There are big things coming for DAOFest and I'm super excited to be a part of the community and empowered to not only vote and make decisions within the DAO but also to conduct the workshop and build towards the launch of my own DAO through the DAOstack ecosystem and Alchemy, their toolkit. I'm guessing by now, if you're still reading you want to know what the heck it is I proposed? Here ya go!
DAO of WU
A work in progress of course so stay tuned for more! I don't mean to detract from my BestDapp selection at all, but to highlight something that I'm building that was inspired by joining the DAOstack community is a big leap forward to achieving my goal of creating a sustainable creative community and helping others to do the same.
Short & Sweet
I read somewhere that the optimal length for a blog post should be around 1600 words. I'm well short of the mark, but I know that if you've made it this far and you have an interest in DAOs you will have a lot more reading ahead of you. Or, if you're still not sold on the idea, maybe a short video can explain it to you better than I can.
DAOstack Voted BestDapp by Me!
Thanks for reading :P
Yours truly,
Vandal
BTW... If I win, I'll be using the funds to build the DAO of WU and empower creative communities. Also, if you're interested in getting involved just drop a comment and let's connect!
