In this last weekend's episode of exercising dogs at the local kennels, a Rottweiler bit another dog through its cage. The second dog made the mistake of sticking a paw through the fence while the Rottweiler was standing in front of it and snarling. One chomp later and the pooch's pad was punctured.
I was honestly surprised at the incident, since this particular Rotter is a sweet-tempered and easy-going individual. (Most of the Rottweilers I exercise are big teddy bears, despite public perception of the breed.) However, I learned later that she takes exception to certain dogs and becomes vicious towards them. I never would have guessed.
Anyway, I had to get the chomped bitch to lie down and hold her still while the manager looked at the wounded foot and decided what to do. She phoned the owner and suggested taking the pooch to the local vet for stitches, which is what happened.
The wound bled quite badly and I ended up with a lot of blood on my clothes. i managed to wash it out and clean up the kennel before it dried, partly because it's sometimes a mission to get dried blood out of fabric, but mainly because we don't particularly want other customers to see dog blood; it doesn't give a good impression for a kennels that prides itself on providing excellent care for beloved pets. Still, accidents happen because dogs are going to do what they do.
I feel bad about the incident, not because I think I'm at fault (which I don't). There's nothing that I could have done to prevent it, other than not exercise the Rotter, which is my job. I feel bad because I care about the dogs. I hope the wounded pooch is OK or will be. I've yet to hear back about her, but I'm sure my employer will let me know.
So much for me thinking that I would have a quiet day exercising only thirty dogs! I should have known better than to tempt Fate! ...
