A while ago, I discovered this little article about the Sydney University/Usyd privacy warning people love to paste on their antisocial media profiles. It turns out that, if you are one of these derps, you may well have been mind-fucked on a mass scale by a prankster. Well done to whomsoever that was for helping to flag mindless drone conformists. 😂🤣
For those who don't know, the warning looks something like this:
To Sydney University and any other institutions or individuals using this site or any of its associated sites for studies or projects – YOU DO NOT have permission to use any of my profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal ramifications. (I suggest the rest of you post this notice.)
If you are on Fratlife, FB, IG or any other social media site, and post information about yourself or pictures that you take or share, they can and most likely will be used elsewhere on the Internet*, and by law enforcement and other government agencies. In some cases, they can be used against you for the purpose of securing search and/or arrest warrants, or in civil cases. Posting silly disclaimers or warnings is not going to protect you or your rights. The only thing you can do to protect copyrights of your materials is to either not post anything about yourself, or post pictures on your own website with a copyright notice. Even then, they may be used elsewhere under the Fair-Use Doctrine, and still may be used against you in court.
- A case in point: Many years ago, a former FWB (who was incredibly sexy, just oozed sex appeal) posted, to Geeks Are Sexy, a photo of herself dressed as Cat Woman in fetish gear for Halloween. Within hours, it was doing the rounds on porn picture sites. It took at least a day to get it pulled from GAS' site (who complied within minutes, to their credit) and those of a number of offenders. Whether it has completely disappeared from the 'Net, I don't know (and haven't bothered to look). I don't even know the statistics for such incidents, whether revenge porn or otherwise. Quite frankly, I don't want to either.
