Samsung is considering a cryptocurrency platform, according to South Korean media, joining several companies in applying for licenses to run virtual asset exchanges
As early as next year, Samsung might introduce its own cryptocurrency exchange.
Samsung 005930 is one of several businesses in the nation that have recently attempted to secure legitimate licenses from financial regulators for a virtual asset exchange, according to a story from NewsPim, a South Korean newspaper that is one of Factiva's news sources.
According to the article, Samsung intends to establish its virtual currency business in the first half of 2023. The necessary financial permits for such a move are being obtained by Samsung through Samsung Securities Co., Ltd. 016360, a financial services firm and subsidiary of the broader Samsung Group.
Six other South Korean businesses, in addition to Samsung, are interested in participating in the cryptocurrency market and are collaborating with the nation's financial regulators to make that happen, according to the article. One of the biggest investment banking and stock brokerage firms in South Korea, Mirae Asset Securities Co., Ltd. 006800, is another one of those businesses.
There aren't many further specifics about Samsung's crypto platform, and company reps weren't immediately available for comment.
