You're dealing with a device that has a cellphone carrier. Cellphone carrier has a sim card. That sim card on your phone and the carriers actually have a record of that sim card.

There's a type of hack called "SIM SAWP HACK" where basically without even taking your phone they can trick the carrier into believing that a sim that's on a different device actually belongs to your device. At that moment then whatever device you have is no longer being on your carrier so basically the other party can actually take over your device and they have your phone number they can send messages they can go back and forth and do anything.
