We all get easily impressed by the natural money maker (Buffett?), the brainy student, the gifted musician (Bach?) or the star athlete (Federer?). “What talent!” we wonder.
People are dealing with daily issues, in a totally different way. The simple reason behind this, is they differ in how they think, create and invent ways of doing things.
This may be called creativity or talent of doing something.
A Talent (or gift, or aptitude) is the skill that someone naturally has to do something that is hard.
But is it an ability that you are born with or you can learn by time and practice?
Many of skills are subject to be learnt not gifted. But there are aspects of talent which people are born with. A taller boy, has a better potential for becoming a volleyball player, but someone who practices lifetime to jump higher with a shorter height, can achieve more than him.
Most people say they are "born with a talent". It is a high degree of ability or of aptitude.
In fact, Learning and talent development are undergoing a transformation in organizations today.
In another word, you need to learn best practices for selecting, recruiting, and on-boarding your talents. You should also learn about the key approaches to measuring performance, as something with no measures, is not manageable.
I will write later about regrets of people who discovered their talents very late, when they think their golden ages wasted with doing things they didn't like to.
Which mindset do you have?
Answer these questions about intelligence. Read each statement and decide whether you mostly agree or disagree with it.
- Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can’t change very much.
- You can learn new things but you can’t really change how intelligent you are.
- No matter how much intelligence you have, you can always change it quite a bit.
- You can always substantially change how intelligent you are.
Questions 1 and 2 are fixed mindset questions. Questions 3 and 4 reflect the growth mindset. Which mindset did you agree with more?
You also have beliefs about other abilities. You could substitute artistic talent, sports ability or business ability for intelligence. Or personal qualities, too. Try it.
