How I currently rank the teams in the NHL and why - NHL Power rankings 2021-02-21

By Yttrandefrihet | Hockey Thoughts | 21 Feb 2021

Welcome to my first power rankings! Here, I will rate what teams I consider to be the weakest, the strongest, and what goes in between, in the entire NHL.

It's a bit of a special season, because all games are played within the divisions because of Covid-19. But this is a game of gut feeling and cherry-picked statistics anyway. :)

These are not the current standings. These are a mix of how well the team has played lately, and their record for the last few games.

This is my list, starting from the currently weakest team in the league, to the currently strongest.

31 Calgary Flames

The Flames have been just miserable for several games now. They shot a bucketload of shots against the Oilers last night, and none of them were really threatening. Their zone entries are crap. Their power play doesn't work. They start their games about midway through the first period. I can't look at any team right now and say, these guys are worse than Calgary.

30 Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks can't score. Their offense is very, very lacking. When they win a game, it's because the goalie stole it. But at least they have that - One of the best goalie pairs in the entire NHL.

29 Detroit Red Wings

Detroit are not as bad as last season. They win a game here and there. Still, the lack of quality is showing across the board.

28 Ottawa Senators

Just like with Detroit, there's an overall lack of quality. But there are more bright spots. Stützle is a stud, for example.

27 Nashville Predators

The Predators just go from bad to worse. Especially their offense is struggling. Forsberg is pulling the load pretty much by himself.

26 Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver have found their game at last, and they've even won a couple of games. Trending in the right direction, but they have a lot to prove after their miserable start of the season.

25 San Jose Sharks

The Sharks did well against the Blues, but then again, so did Arizona. San Jose are just mediocre across the board.

24 Buffalo Sabres

Lots of almost lately for the Sabres. I think they are better than the results show. Their division is really tough.

23 New York Rangers

Things are starting to take shape for the Rangers. Still, they have a long way to go. Will climb if they keep their current form.

22 Los Angeles Kings

The Kings have won their last four games! They don't look convincing at all times though. I can't put them higher than this I think.

21 Arizona Coyotes

Impressed a lot against the Blues, but then they lost to the Kings. Still, I give them the benefit of the doubt. They are solid, hard to beat. I think they are the biggest threat to Minnesota for the last playoff spot.

20 Columbus Blue Jackets

It's very much up and down with the Jackets. You never know where you have them from one game to the next. They've had a positive trend since Laine and Roslovic arrived, but they lost their last game.

19 New Jersey Devils

The Devils have a very promising, upcoming young team. They have shown that they already now have what it takes to contend in the toughest division. I don't think they will make the playoffs, but they will stay in the race for a while yet.

18 Minnesota Wild

They win when they should win. They are solid, but not impressive. I don't see them go far, but I think they will make the playoffs.

17 Dallas Stars

The Stars haven't played for the last few days, because of the power situation in Texas. It's hard to weigh them right now, but considering what they've done up until now, I'll put them about here.

16 Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have been the biggest positive surprise this season. They were ranked among the last prior to the season. People were arguing on which of them and Detroit would finish last in the division.

Then Toews and Dach came up with long term injuries, making everything worse. Delia and Subban were seen as untested. I was arguing for giving Lankinen a chance. I didn't expect him to do THIS well though! Chicago look like they could make the playoffs now!

15 St Louis Blues

The Blues have played even games against Arizona and San Jose lately. Not really convincing. They should be further up, but I can't put them there right now.

14 Washington Capitals

Washington has been miserable lately. But they have so much skill in the team, and games are hard to win in their division, and that comeback against the Devils was promising. I'll not put them further down than 14th for now, but if they keep losing a lot, then they will drop.

13 New York Islanders

The Islanders are finding their game. They have started to score. The defense was always there. If they make the playoffs, hard to say. They are one of five teams that are too good to not make it, and there are four spots. Add to that, that the Rangers are starting to look better, and that the Devils have gotten their youngsters to start producing. This will be a hard race!

12 Edmonton Oilers

When the Oilers are on, they are really ON! If they can play like they did in their games against Calgary, they could go far. But their goaltending is shaky.

11 Winnipeg Jets

Great forward group, great depth down the middle, great goalies, and now the defense is starting to look OK as well. The Jets look dangerous!

10 Montreal Canadiens

The Habs are just solid. A really hard team to play against. Good at all aspects of the game.

9 Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins are looking better and better. The goaltending is looking much better now. Even Malkin scores!

8 Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers are solid. Really hard to beat. But sometimes, they lose games they should win. Still, one of the best teams in the NHL for sure.

7 Florida Panthers

What has happened to the Panthers? Suddenly, they just work! It will be interesting to see what they can do in the playoffs. That they will make it there, I have no doubt of.

6 Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs have come together this season. It's hard to say how good they are though, when their division is... Well, they just don't have any opponents quite at this level. How would they fare against the top 5 teams?

5 Tampa Bay Lightning

Injuries have been a big part in Tampa losing the last couple of games. But they still look solid, and I think they will bounce back. If they keep losing games though, then they will drop in the rankings.

4 Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas are good in all aspects of the game. They just seem to find wins everywhere. Now they lost last night, but that was against a very strong opponent. The Golden Nights sure look like one of the strongest contenders for the cup!

3 Carolina Hurricanes

The win last night against Tampa was just straight out impressive. And it wasn't an outflier. The Canes look great!

2 Colorado Avalanche

Colorado have gone through some injury issues, but now they are starting to get their key pieces back, and they look great.

1 Boston Bruins

Boston excel, and that in the hardest division in the entire NHL. I have no place to put them but first.

How do you rate this article?
