Someone paid $ 2.5 million just to transfer 0.55 ETH. Is this simply a software bug or a mistake of "the rich" or worse than a giant money laundering business?

Spend $ 2.5 million just to transfer 0.55 ETH

Specifically, at 16:47 yesterday, a transaction sent 0.55 ETH from an anonymous wallet to a wallet on the Bithumb exchange for a total fee of 10,668.73 ETH.

This has caused the average fee of ETH to "shoot" to an all-time high due to this bizarre trade. The analysis platform Glassnode immediately explained this phenomenon in a recent tweet:

"Historically, this is the highest we've seen. This increase is due to a single transaction that spent $ 2.5 million on fees transfer 0.55 ETH "

What happened?

Quite a lot of people are inclined to the theory that this is a huge money laundering through a complex plan of criminals. However, many people think that this is simply a software error that makes the numbers jump.

"FollowTheChain" has stated that this transaction has been automated before and despite an error, it is still in progress. Most likely the exchange is running a reserve segment.

“My take:

Not a fat finger.
Not money laundering.

Txs (withdrawals?) are automated, and they just kept going like nothing happened. This is a bug in the software that controls those funds.

Most likely some entity (an exchange?) is now running a fractional reserve.”

A small number of others say this is just a mistake of "the rich", when the data on Blockchain shows that the "whale" performing this transaction still has about 10 million USD ETH in the wallet.
