The social media app Damus is faced with possible removal from iPhones over its in-app Bitcoin tipping feature, known as "zaps." The app’s creator, Bill Casarin, has said that he is disappointed with the decision and that he is currently considering his options, including removing zaps for the time being.

Damus originally launched in February and has since acquired tens of thousands of users. The app allows users to post and interact with content on the decentralized Nostr protocol without the need for a central authority.

The removal of Damus from iPhones would be a significant blow to the decentralized social media movement. It would also be a setback for the Bitcoin community, which has been using zaps to promote the use of Bitcoin for peer-to-peer payments.

It remains to be seen whether Damus will indeed become unavailable to new and existing iPhone users. However, the situation has highlighted the importance of decentralizing social media platforms, including perhaps the infrastructure on which they’re built.

Notwithstanding this development, efforts continue to build Bitcoin’s capabilities and benefits into a wide range of business models and peer-to-peer communities, as Bitcoin has the potential to revolutionize the way we pay for goods and services.
